IFAD and the Government of Mauritius are moving towards a new form of partnership that reflects Mauritius’ recently acquired status as a middle-income country. The focus of IFAD’s interventions in Mauritius has shifted from financing projects towards lending support to the government in reducing the incidence of poverty in the country, through policy dialogue, knowledge management and sharing, and partnership building. In particular IFAD is helping the country introduce new pro-poor policies and reforms to protect the more disadvantaged members of society and to mitigate the effects of the economic upheavals the country is currently experiencing, as a result of losing preferential trade agreements for textiles and sugar and the increase in transport costs. IFAD also supports the government in addressing complex policy dilemmas involving both environmental conservation and marine resource management, and issues of livelihoods, development and social welfare.
