During more than a decade of open conflict, IFAD continued to implement programme and project activities, working to improve food security and support rural communities affected by the upheaval. As a result of this experience it has strengthened its ability to contribute to an effective strategy of assistance and policy dialogue for Burundi’s reconstruction. IFAD’s post-conflict strategy focuses on regenerating sustainable livelihoods, improving food security in rural areas, and on community development and rebuilding of social fabric in war-torn areas.
The Value Chain Development Programme’s through greater professionalization and organization among smallholder agricultural producers within viable agricultural value chains, will help reduce the country’s grain and dairy deficit.
