SSII - Overview and goals

Overview

Promoting innovation is part of priorities identified in the IFAD’s knowledge management strategy and in its new strategic framework 2007-2010. In addition to that, access to innovation by rural poor is a key issue in agriculture and rural development and in poverty reduction in Western and Central Africa.

Many innovations have been identified and developed through the implementation of IFAD-funded projects and programmes, but they still unknown out of their area. Moreover, there is not any systematic approach or mechanism to identify, index and disseminate these innovations towards the programmes and projects financed by the IFAD.

This initiative constitutes the starting point of a programme of capturing and disseminating innovations in the field of agriculture within IFAD and in the region. SSII will deal with innovations of regional scope or which have a potential to be retorted in different contexts in number of countries in WCA.

Goals

- to promote and valorise innovative processes, technological innovations and promising practices developed by the projects
- to document, analyze and disseminate innovations for implementation in the IFAD-funded projects and programmes
- to develop tools and supports of communication, in collaboration with projects, regional partners and various actors in order to present the innovations
- to support the innovations identification and sharing process in the region and to install a innovation management mechanism within the projects financed by the IFAD

The innovation led by IFAD-funded projects and programmes and some partners in WCA will be documented, presented and discussed during a Regional Innovations Fair. Parallel to the fair, a prospective Workshop will be held with the aims to:

- promote and capitalise on innovative processes, technological innovations and promising policies developed in the region;
- exchange and disseminate information, knowledge and lessons relating to experiences capitalised in the field of the innovation;
- exchange on regional and international experiences, priority actions and on the political framework to set up at local, regional and national levels;
- promote the innovation in response to the challenges facing agricultural and rural development in Western Central Africa.

This pilot process and tools developed will help design a mechanism and a systematic approach of disseminating innovations in the field of agriculture within IFAD and in the region.
