Northern rural growth programme

The NRGP is to be the umbrella body for IFAD Projects in the Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions of Ghana.

With the completion of the IFAD projects in Ghana (UWADEP & LACOSREP) and the impact outlined by the Evaluation Mission much thought has been to the approach of IFAD, with a decision to work less in project style and more in programme style. This is to conform with the development trends in the country with the introduction of the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS) and the need to contribute to National Development Results. There is much thought of the need to develop an Institutional System that recognises the need to: i) achieve sustainable agricultural development and livelihoods, ii) develop pro-poor rural enterprises (Micro Finance), iii) strengthen local institutions and iv) develop a responsive pro-poor policy. This except of the concept paper therefore outlines a skeletal structure of the program.
