Poverty is widespread in the Upper East Region (UER) of Ghana and there is a very high degree of household food insecurity among the rural population. In these areas of high and increasing population density, farm sizes are shrinking and soil fertility is declining. While progress has been achieved in terms of physical implementation of productive infrastructure and the building of a local capacity to properly manage the newly developed potential, villages and districts in the UER are still ranked as being the most food insecure and poorest of the country. This project’s target groups are defined as those sections of the population that are most at risk from malnutrition, ill health and a generally low quality of life. However, rural people are drawn into the ‘at risk’ category due to a combination of factors, including lack of resources and access to adequate basic services and facilities. The project is supposed to benefit to 34.400 households.
