Training on yam sett multiplication by IRAD Bambui
Yam is one of the tubers that are highly appreciated by many Cameroonian families but the supply is lower than demand in our local markets. Conscious of this PNDRT entered into collaboration with IITA and IRAD to identify, multiply and distribute yam setts to farmers who will in turn multiply and distribute to others so as to increase the quantity of yam in our markets.
The global objective is to render ware yams accessible to Cameroonian households and the specifics objectives are:
- Build the capacities of farmers on the techniques of set preparation
- Show beneficiaries how to identify and control pests and diseases in the farm and in store
- Make planting materials available to a large number of producers
Forty eight producers from twenty four villages of the Bamenda and Douala antennas took part in the training. The trainers come from IRAD, IITA Ibadan and Yaounde and Regional college of Agriculture. The practical training was appreciated by most the farmers. The beneficiaries also received improved planting materials produced by IRAD Bambui.
The training was a real necessity. The modules were well assimilated. The beneficiaries went home well armed to start the process of multiplication of yams for the next planting season.
